*Research the ideas and works of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Jean Jacques Rousseau and the Baron Montesquieu.  If you're having trouble answering some of the questions below - don't worry about it. Get an understanding of the four political philosophers above and do question 6.


1) Define or identify: Enlightenment, social contract, natural rights, philosophe, atheist, deist, separation of powers, enlightened despot, salon, baroque, Classical.

2) What traditions and privileges of monarchs, nobles, and clergy did the philosophes challenge?

3) Why did Montesquieu urge separation of powers in government?

4) What was the attitude of most philosophes toward democracy?

5) How did the ideas of the Enlightenment affect the arts?
